Mining has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated industry, but women like Aleeyah are breaking down barriers and bringing new skills, perspectives and dedication to the field.
Based at Newmont Boddington – near Perth, WA – Aleeyah is a Programmed trades employee who shares her journey into the mining sector, the rewards from her work and her advice for women considering a career in mining.
Her story showcases the resilience and growth that women bring to this thriving industry.
Starting out: Progress in mining and resources
Aleeyah began her journey into mining as a contractor with Programmed at Newmont Boddington in early 2024. Reflecting on her growth since then, she acknowledges that her progression was both unique and transformative, shaping her trade skills and personal character alike.
“Personally, I feel my progression has been significantly different to what one might expect,” Aleeyah explains.
“From my time here, I have not only gained qualifications and knowledge in my trade but also grown in character and independence.
“Working in this industry has taught me adaptability and how to overcome challenges, regardless of the time or place.
“This chapter in my life has been not only significant to my career but also essential for my personal development.”

A close support network
Aleeyah’s career choice was influenced by her upbringing and her family’s connection to the mining and resources sector.
Although she didn’t have a formal mentor, she credits her success to her drive to push through challenges and succeed independently.
This determination has helped her carve her own path, guided by family inspiration and her community’s strong ties to mining.
Why mining? A career close to home
Living close to the Newmont site, Aleeyah saw an opportunity to step into a booming industry within her local community.
As a Boddington local, she appreciates the unique balance of working in a demanding sector while still being close to her family and friends.
“For me, the attraction was the proximity to the Newmont site,” she said.
“The idea of going to work in a progressing industry close to home was significant – I could work hard but still go home to my family and friends every night.”
Rewards and challenges in mining

For Aleeyah, the self-satisfaction that comes from achieving her goals is the most rewarding part of her job – she relishes the chance to continually improve, knowing she’s contributing to an industry that both challenges and fulfills her.
Transitioning into mining, however, was not without its hurdles; Aleeyah’s previous job involved hard labour, which eased her physical transition, but stepping into a new industry with unfamiliar people and expectations presented its own mental challenges.
“Although physically it was an easy transition, mentally it was extremely daunting,” she says.
Words of wisdom for women considering a career in mining
Aleeyah’s advice to women who may be hesitant about entering the mining sector is to face any fears head-on.
“Don’t let fear of the unknown hold you back – work hard for the things you want because that’s the only way you’ll truly have them,” she said.
Aleeyah’s journey in mining demonstrates the power of resilience, self-reliance and the importance of bringing fresh perspectives to established industries.
Her story is an inspiration for women in all fields, showing that, with determination, it’s possible to carve out rewarding paths in industries traditionally dominated by men.
