From the Streets to Success: Kylie’s Inspiring Journey with Programmed

23 October 2025

Until just three years ago, Kylie’s life looked very different. Living on the streets of Darwin, she faced uncertainty every single day, unsure where life was heading or when she would get her next opportunity.

That opportunity came in the form of family. When her brother, who was going through a divorce, reached out for help with his two young daughters, Kylie made a brave decision. She boarded a flight to Cairns to support her family and start fresh.

“I moved here to help him and the girls out and to get off the streets,” Kylie shared.

After settling in Cairns, Kylie found work but was unfortunately made redundant a year later due to limited work. Despite months of searching for and applying for roles, she faced constant rejection, surviving on Centrelink while her mental health declined.

Then came a turning point.

Through ITEC Employment, Kylie was introduced to the idea of a traineeship with Programmed and RoadTek.

“To be honest, with the luck I’d been having, I didn’t think I stood a chance,” Kylie admitted.

Everything changed when she met Michael Smith from Programmed. His belief in her potential and his willingness to go above and beyond opened a door that would change Kylie’s life forever.

“Michael totally went to bat for me, talking me up to RoadTek so that when I came in for my interview, it was totally a sure thing.”

Kylie began her traineeship as a receptionist with RoadTek, but her dedication, attitude, and willingness to learn quickly stood out. She soon moved into the costing team, where she now works as a PCO Trainee for Cairns Maintenance while completing her Certificate III in Financial Services.

Her achievements since then have been nothing short of remarkable. Kylie has received multiple course nominations and was awarded a Highly Commended Cubie Award in the 2025 Unleash Potential category, recognising outstanding performance across Queensland. Her team was also nominated for excellence in collaboration, the only costing team from the Manunda Depot to be recognised.

“Honestly, after meeting Michael and Programmed, my life has completely changed for the better. Michael is always helpful, willing to listen, and has totally had my back since I became one of his trainees.”

Today, Kylie is not only thriving in her role but is an inspiration to others who may be struggling to find their way. Her story is a testament to the power of opportunity, resilience, and the life-changing impact of traineeships.

“I just want to say thank you to Michael and Programmed for giving me a chance and making my life the best it’s ever been.”

At Programmed, stories like Kylie’s remind us why we do what we do, helping people find their path, build their confidence, and unlock their potential through meaningful work and training.
