Jeremiah Jabbour, second year apprentice in the mechanical department at Programmed Industrial Maintenance’s (PIM) Wollongong branch was awarded first place for Stage 1 in fitting and machining. A presentation was held at the Wollongong TAFE campus on 2 May.
Jeremiah received the A.J.S (Stan) Gilroy Memorial Shield which was presented to him by Barry and Allan Gilroy, Stan’s two sons. Stan was one of the early founders of the Machine Shop at BlueScope Steel in Wollongong.
This is the 12th year that this prize has been awarded and it is a credit to Jeremiah, and a true testament to his ability, that he was awarded this prestigious prize above 47 other candidates. It was noted during the presentation that there were many very good candidates, however Jeremiah’s hard work and dedication stood out and confirmed that he was a worthy recipient of the award.
As well as the shield, Jeremiah was presented a certificate and a box set of micrometres in front of his parents Taylor and Emily, TAFE representatives and the PIM Management Team.
A big congratulations to Jeremiah on a great achievement.
What Jeremiah says about his experience as an apprentice:
“I’m currently a second year fitter and turner apprentice with the hope to further study as a mechanical engineer. As I am processing though my trade I am not just learning basic skills, I am learning skills which will assist me in all areas of my life and my further study.
Currently in my studies I am learning the understandings and concepts of mechanical engineering. I am based at BlueScope working in a crew of at least 10. We go in on shutdowns and call-in’s, to replace or fix the machinery used to make steel.
From the start of my apprenticeship I have always been encouraged by Programmed to have big goals both at work and outside of work which they have assisted me in achieving. After my apprenticeship my goal is to go on and become an engineer, studying commerce or business, and eventually take up a major leadership role.”
